RHD has been recognized for the success of their arts based day programs which are based in Boston, Rhode Island and Missouri.
This type of program makes an impact in people’s lives as well as local arts communities for a number of reasons. First of all, the focus of this program is to give people who experience disabilities a self-made identity. They are encouraged to explore mediums and projects of their choice and through this freedom to chose, they create a unique vocation which capitalizes on their personal abilities and talents.
Furthermore, as each individual recognizes the strengths they possess, their self-esteem begins to build. Often, art becomes a replacement skill for other maladaptive behaviors because it reduces boredom, increases independence and breaks down barriers to effective communication. Finally, this style of program makes an impact on local arts communities. Local artists are hired as staff which makes integration into the community a natural extension of the supports created within the environment.
Overall, the program takes a relatively new approach to day services for people with disabilities but has proven to be successful, with 4 vibrant and established programs within the RHD cooperation.
